About

Madalyn May is an visual artist, living and working in Brooklyn NY.

My work explores impermanence and rebirth, I am thinking about the body as a  material, one that is constantly decaying, growing and perpetually linked to the natural world. My paintings depict fantasy, memory and a divine feminine spirit. I am interested in the unconscious, in finding images familiar yet unknown.

I work in oil paint over acrylic. I start each painting not knowing where it will take me. I begin in acrylic, working abstract and allowing myself to interpret the image, finding forms and figures hidden within like ghosts or spirits. I paint on on slick surfaces, pushing, scratching lines and layering as a form of chaos and control.

I think of my work as an alter to the universe. I paint to see what’s in my head. To understand what’s on the back burner of my consciousness. I believe in a connection to nature and world around us, perhaps something I myself struggle to fully comprehend.
